MEET OUR PEOPLE
John & Gail Kautz
Ironstone Vineyards / Owners & Growers
HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU BEEN FARMING? HOW MANY YEARS HAS YOUR FAMILY BEEN FARMING?
The family has been farming since 1923; we began farming winegrapes in 1968.
WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU’D LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT LODI?
Micro climate of the Lodi region with the Pacific Ocean breezes coming through and across the million acre Delta is what makes this a special appellation.
WHAT IS YOUR FIRST MEMORY OF WINE AND HOW DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE MEMBERS OF THE INDUSTRY?
Gail: My father pouring my sister and I a small glass of wine to taste at a special dinner. John: Creating our own wine coolers (we weren’t experienced with wine yet); continuing to enjoy better wines as time went on.
CURRENTLY, WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO DRINK?
Kautz & Kramer Sentimental Journey Chardonnay, named by our children in honor of our first dance song performed by Doris Day.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL SPOT OR SPOTS IN LODI?
Our favorite spots are the San Joaquin County Museum and Micke Grove Park.
